The English word "mathematics" actually comes from the Greek μάθημα (máthēma), which means learning, study, science. It has to lead to a more narrow meaning and more technical meaning "mathematical fields", even in classical times.
It adjectives is μαθηματικός (mathÄ“matikós), in relation to learning, or learned, which means more means mathematical. In particular, μαθηματικὴ Ï„Îχνη thing (mathÄ“matikḗ tékhnÄ“), in Latin ars mathematica, meant the mathematical art.
